The Defence Ministry has announced the introduction of Other Backward Class (OBC) reservation in Sainik Schools from the academic year 2021-22. The announcement was made by Defence Secretary Ajay Kumar who tweeted: “OBC reservation to be introduced in Sainik Schools from the year 2021-22.”
The 27% reservation for OBCs will be in addition to the existing 15% for SCs, 7.5% for STs, and 25% for children of serving and retired military personnel under the “defence category” in Sainik Schools. The Sainik Schools Society, which works under the Ministry of Defence, manages 33 such residential schools in the country.
Sainik Schools made a modest beginning in 1961 and has 67% of the seats reserved for candidates from the State or the Union Territory (UT) in which the school is located and the remaining 33% is reserved for students from other States/UTs.
