NEW DELHI: The National Testing Agency (NTA) has announced the inclusion of four new examination cities in the North-Eastern region of India for the upcoming UGC NET June 2026 examination. The decision was taken to address the limited availability of local centers and minimize long-distance travel difficulties for aspirants living in remote areas.
The newly introduced choices have been integrated into the centralized application tracking database, allowing candidates from eight North-Eastern states to revise their test venue preferences.
Newly added examination cities and codes:
- Arunachal Pradesh: Namsai (City Code: AL03)
- Manipur: Kakching (City Code: MN04)
- Manipur: Bishnupur (City Code: MN05)
- Meghalaya: Cherrapunji (City Code: MG02)
Key application and modification guidelines:
- Flexible Zoning: Under the updated guidelines, applicants belonging to Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim, and Tripura can dynamically select examination centers situated across neighboring North-Eastern states.
- Correction Window Permissibility: Candidates can utilize the online correction facility to update critical fields such as examination city preferences, date of birth, gender, category, sub-category, and parental names.
- Prohibited Modifications: The NTA has explicitly clarified that candidates will not be permitted to modify their registered mobile numbers, email addresses, permanent/present addresses, uploaded photographs, or signatures.
Examination overview:
The national-level screening test is scheduled to be conducted from June 22 to June 30, 2026, in a computer-based test (CBT) mode across the country. This year, the University Grants Commission (UGC) has expanded its framework to encompass 87 distinct subjects following the introduction of two new disciplines: Forestry and Statistics.
The test determines the national eligibility of Indian candidates for the award of Junior Research Fellowship (JRF), appointment as Assistant Professor, and direct admissions into PhD research programs.
