The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has published a draft proposal for administering board examinations for Class 10 students biannually starting in 2026 on its official website, cbse.gov.in, and has solicited feedback from relevant stakeholders. If this proposal is enacted, it will introduce several significant modifications to the existing framework.
Here is essential information for students and parents regarding the proposed scheme:
- With the introduction of two board examinations, there will be an increase in fees. CBSE will collect fees for both assessments when schools submit the Lists of Candidates (LOCs) for the final examinations.
No passing document will be issued following the results of the first examination. Students opting not to take the second examination may utilize the performance details available through DigiLocker for admission into Class 11. Pass certificates will only be distributed after the results of the second examination.
The marks sheet-cum-pass certificate will reflect the scores obtained in both the first and second examinations, as well as marks from practical exams/internal assessments and corresponding grades. The higher score from the two will also be indicated. - Despite the presence of two theory examinations, the practical exam/internal assessment will be conducted only once.
Students who do not pass the first examination may be provisionally admitted to Class 12. Their admission will be confirmed based on their performance in the second examination. - To be declared as passing, students must qualify in all five subjects. Those who do not succeed in the first examination will be categorized for improvement in the second examination.
- CBSE will not permit any changes in subjects for the first examination after the LOC has been submitted. Students wishing to change subjects after submitting the LOC may do so only for the second examination. They may choose not to take that subject in the first examination; however, if they do take it, they will not be allowed to change the subject for the second examination.
- CBSE will not hold any additional examinations for students who take only the second examination. These students may take the first examination in the following academic year. Should the board revise the syllabus for the next year, they will be required to take the examination based on the updated syllabus exclusively
- The CBSE will assess the policy after gathering feedback. If necessary, the policy will be modified and finalized accordingly. The examination bye-laws will be appropriately amended.
- Following the feedback, the policy will undergo a review, revision, and finalization process.
The examination bye-laws will be suitably amended.
