The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has released a draft proposal for the administration of the Class 10 Board Examination in 2026, which will be conducted twice annually.
Rahul Singh, the Chairperson of the Board, announced that this draft policy aligns with the recommendations outlined in the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and has been developed following extensive discussions.
The proposed draft maintains the existing examination framework while allowing students the option to take the second board examinations in as many subjects as they choose. This initiative aims to provide students with an additional chance to enhance their academic performance.
According to a statement from CBSE, the Board currently offers 16 academic subjects, 23 skill subjects, and 45 languages for students in grades 9 and 10. Students may select any two languages and three elective subjects from the academic subjects list. Additionally, they can choose one skill subject as their sixth subject and one more language as their seventh subject, allowing a maximum of seven subjects in Class X. This subject selection scheme will remain unchanged for the 2026 board examinations.
The official press release indicates a significant shift from the current examination process, proposing that some subjects will be assessed two to three times, enabling students to better align their subject choices. This change is expected to shorten the overall examination duration.
Students with special needs will continue to receive the same accommodations currently provided.
CBSE has invited feedback from stakeholders and the general public. Following the collection of this feedback, the Board will make necessary adjustments to the proposed scheme.
