Delhi University (DU) is set to commence admissions at Veer Savarkar College in Roshanpura, Najafgarh, starting this academic session, representing a significant milestone in the university’s growth after nearly thirty years.
Vice Chancellor Yogesh Singh announced this development during DU’s 92nd annual court meeting on Friday, as stated in an official release from the university.
Situated just five minutes from DU’s West Campus, the newly constructed Veer Savarkar College encompasses a built-up area of 18,816.56 square meters and has been established at an estimated cost of Rs 140 crore.
The college features 24 classrooms, eight tutorial rooms, 40 faculty offices, departmental libraries, conference rooms, and a canteen. This new institution is part of DU’s extensive expansion strategy aimed at addressing the rising demand for higher education in Delhi, according to the statement.
In addition to Veer Savarkar College, two additional campuses are under development: the East Campus in Surajmal Vihar and the West Campus in Dwarka Sector 22.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone for these campuses on January 3, 2025. The expansion is intended to alleviate the pressure on existing colleges and enhance students’ access to DU’s academic offerings.
According to the statement, for the 2024-25 academic session, DU received 246,194 applications for 79 undergraduate programs across 69 colleges. The total number of course preferences submitted reached 17,218,187, with 70,422 students successfully admitted.
DU is also launching several new academic programs, including MTech in Computer Science, BA (Hons) in Russian, DM in Geriatric Mental Health, DM in Pulmonary Medicine, and MSc in Psychiatry (Mental Health).
Skill-based education is increasingly popular among DU students, with “Personality Development and Communication” emerging as the most sought-after skill enhancement course (SEC), chosen by 38,642 students.
Other popular courses include “Political Leadership and Communication,” which has enrolled 36,193 students, “Digital Marketing” with 35,370 students, and “Communication in Everyday Life,” attracting 31,185 students.
Among the value-added courses, “Digital Empowerment” leads with 69,457 students, followed by “Financial Literacy” with 54,401 students, and “Constitutional Values and the Art of Being Happy,” which has 37,244 students.
VC Singh noted that Delhi University has bolstered its faculty by making 4,784 new academic appointments and promoting 7,423 faculty members across various colleges and departments in the last three and a half years.
The university is allocating Rs 1,838.41 crore for infrastructure projects, which include the construction of new academic buildings, research facilities, and student amenities.
With Veer Savarkar College commencing admissions this year and new campuses being developed, Delhi University is poised to expand its academic offerings and enhance educational opportunities for students throughout Delhi.
