The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi has declared a significant overhaul of its curriculum, marking the first such change in over ten years. The institute has revealed that a thorough revision of its entire academic framework encompassing Undergraduate (UG), Postgraduate (PG), and PhD programmes has been undertaken.
The updated structure, which is the outcome of a comprehensive review initiated in early 2022, is set to be implemented starting from the academic year 2025-26, as stated by IIT Delhi.

At the undergraduate level, the revised curriculum introduces enhanced academic flexibility, practical learning experiences, and a focus on 21st-century skill sets. The overall framework will now be outcomes-oriented, allowing students to tailor their academic paths through elective choices across engineering, sciences, and humanities. Below is a summary of the modifications:
Honours and dual degree options: The introduction of an Honours add-on to the BTech programme and the possibility for students to request an integrated BTech + MTech degree at the conclusion of their third year, facilitating graduation with both degrees within five years.
Programme change flexibility retained: Students who are admitted via JEE (Advanced) will still have the option to alter their academic programme based on their performance in the first year, a well-received policy that remains in effect.
Early departmental exposure: Students will start interacting with their respective departments in the first year, promoting early engagement with their fields of study.
Small class sizes for first-year courses: This initiative is anticipated to enhance the depth of interaction between faculty and students.
Hands-on and ethical learning: There will be improved lab/tutorial components and integrated modules focusing on environmental issues, sustainability, creative expression, and ethical reasoning.
AI-integrated programming education: A notable advancement is the integration of AI-driven code generators within the introductory programming course. Students will be instructed on the responsible use of AI tools, equipping them to address complex challenges effectively and preparing them for a swiftly evolving technological environment.
Flexible core and credit reduction: There will be a decrease in the overall credit requirement alongside a more concentrated core, allowing students to select electives and pursue minor degrees or honours programmes with greater ease.
IIT Delhi new curriculum 2025-26: Three new courses will be introduced.
The institute has declared that starting from the 2025-26 academic year, three new academic programmes will be available:
–BTech in Design: Admission through JEE (Advanced) and UCEED qualification.
–BS in Chemistry: Admission through JEE (Advanced); this marks IIT Delhi’s inaugural standalone BS programme.
–MTech in Photonics: Admission through GATE or an equivalent qualification.

Programme consolidation: Several departments have combined their M.Tech programs to ensure curricular coherence and streamlined offerings.

In a statement, IIT Delhi Director Prof Rangan Banerjee encapsulated the goal of the reform, stating, “We have reviewed and revamped our curriculum to prepare our graduates for the future. The new curriculum has been developed following extensive feedback from stakeholders and offers flexibility and practical learning opportunities for our students.
