The Indian Institute of Technology Hyderabad (IITH) has been officially designated as an Institute of National Eminence by the Income Tax Department, Ministry of Finance, as of March 27, 2025. This recognition allows for a complete tax exemption under Section 80G of the Income-tax Act, 1961, for donations made to the institute.
Previously, contributions to IITH qualified for a 50% tax exemption; however, this new status enables donors to receive a full tax deduction. This change is anticipated to significantly enhance philanthropic support, allowing IITH to further its efforts in academic excellence, research, technological innovation, and infrastructure enhancement.
Moreover, this acknowledgment emphasizes IITH’s rising prominence as a leader in science, technology, and innovation, while also reflecting its dedication to advancing pioneering research and development.
Prof. B. S. Murty, the Director of IITH, expressed his appreciation for this achievement, stating: “We invite philanthropists, corporate partners, and supporters to join us in our mission to promote transformative education, innovative research, and the development of indigenous technologies. This presents a valuable opportunity to make a meaningful contribution to innovation and societal advancement as we strive towards Viksit Bharat.” Prof. Mahendrakumar Madhavan, Dean (ACR), remarked: “Philanthropy is a rewarding endeavor, particularly when it supports a noble cause that benefits society. With the 100% tax exemption on donations, supporting IIT Hyderabad now has an even greater significance, bolstering our research and development initiatives and reinforcing IITH’s status as a national knowledge hub.”
In the 2024 National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF), the Indian Institute of Technology Hyderabad (IITH) achieved an 8th place ranking in the engineering category and 12th overall.
Recently, Swinburne University of Technology in Australia and the Indian Institute of Technology Hyderabad have collaborated to create SIMMECT, the Swinburne-IITH Joint Research Institute focused on Manufacturing, Materials, Energy, and Communication Technologies.
This initiative is designed to strengthen research partnerships between the two institutions, fostering advanced innovations that will have a substantial impact on industry and society.
