The Pharmacy Council of India (PCI) has approved multiple new pharmacy courses to be run in the Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University (GGSIPU) from the 2024-25 academic session. The courses include – DPharm, BPharm, MPharm in pharmaceutics, pharmacology, phytopharmacy and phytomedicine and pharmaceutical chemistry.
As a first, these courses will be introduced on the university campus. All the programmes will be run under the Centre of Excellence in Pharmaceutical Sciences (CEPS). At present CEPS is running two PG programmes – MSc in medicinal chemistry and drug design and MSc in bioinformatics and PhD programme in pharmaceutical chemistry.
According to Prof (Dr) Mahesh Verma, Vice Chancellor of GGSIPU, the DPharm has an intake of 60 seats, BPharm will admit 100 students and MPharm in pharmaceutics, pharmacology, phytopharmacy and phytomedicine and pharmaceutical chemistry has 15 seats each. In all, these courses have an intake of 220 seats.
These courses, according to a university statement, will cater to the need of qualified manpower in the pharmaceutical sector. The teaching pedagogy, hands on experience on the latest equipment, industry-friendly approach will be the unique feature at CEPS, the VC added.
The DPharm admissions will be based on the merit list of Class 12. For the BPharm course, preference will be given to the IPU-CET applicants and then the remaining seats (if any) may be filled in with those who have cleared NEET.
The MPharm seats will be first filled in with those who have qualified the GPAT and then through the CET applicants. The Pharmacy education and profession in India is regulated by the Pharmacy Council of India, a Statutory Body under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. PCI provides the approval of DPharm, BPharm, MPharm in various streams to complete the pharmacy courses.
