National Science Day 2025: Each year, India observes National Science Day on February 28 to honor the groundbreaking discovery of the Raman Effect by the esteemed physicist Sir Chandrasekhara Venkata Raman, commonly referred to as CV Raman.
This day serves as a tribute to CV Raman’s invaluable contributions to the fields of science and technology, celebrating a legacy that continues to motivate generations across the globe.
The inaugural celebration of National Science Day occurred on February 28, 1987.
CV Raman was born in November 1888 in Tiruchirappalli, Tamil Nadu. He obtained his Bachelor’s degree in Physics from Presidency College, Chennai, followed by a Master’s degree from the University of Calcutta. He furthered his academic pursuits with doctoral research at the University of Cambridge.
The Discovery of the Raman Effect
While conducting research at the Indian Association for the Cultivation of Science in Kolkata, Raman achieved his most notable discovery—the inelastic scattering of photons by molecules.
This phenomenon, later termed the Raman Effect, earned him the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1930, making him the first Indian recipient of this distinguished honor.

The theme for National Science Day 2025 is “Empowering Indian Youth for Global Leadership in Science & Innovation for VIKSIT BHARAT.” - According to the Ministry of Science and Technology, this theme highlights the crucial role of young individuals in propelling India’s scientific and technological advancements, in line with the vision of Viksit Bharat 2047, which aspires to create a developed and self-sufficient India.
