In a major relief for the 24 lakh medical aspirants affected by the recent paper leak controversy, Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan has announced that students will be given the flexibility to choose their examination centers for the upcoming NEET UG 2026 Re-Exam.

This decision aims to minimize the logistical burden on students who may have traveled long distances or returned to their hometowns after the cancellation of the initial May 3rd test.

Key Takeaways from the Education Minister’s Briefing

FeaturePolicy Update
Center ChoiceStudents can re-select their preferred city via the NTA portal.
EligibilityAll candidates who registered for the May 3 exam are eligible.
Exam FeeNo additional fee will be charged for the re-test.
Conducting BodyNational Testing Agency (NTA) under CBI supervision.
Re-Exam DateExpected announcement within the next 48 hours.

Why the “Center Choice” Option was Introduced

Following the official cancellation of the NEET UG 2026 exam on May 12, the Ministry of Education recognized several challenges faced by aspirants:

  • Travel Constraints: Many students appeared for the exam in cities far from their permanent residences. Forcing them back to the original center would cause financial and mental stress.
  • Accommodation Logistics: Since the re-exam is likely to fall during the peak monsoon or summer travel season, allowing students to choose centers closer to home ensures higher attendance and comfort.
  • Logistical Overhaul: By allowing students to re-choose centers, the NTA can redistribute the candidate load to centers that have undergone stricter security audits following the paper leak.

Security Measures for the Re-Exam

To restore the sanctity of the medical entrance process, Minister Pradhan outlined a “Zero-Error” security protocol for the re-conducted test:

  1. AI-Based Monitoring: Enhanced AI-surveillance at all centers to detect suspicious behavioral patterns.
  2. GPS-Tracked Paper Movement: Question papers will be transported in digital lockers with real-time GPS tracking and OTP-based opening mechanisms.
  3. CBI Oversight: The entire logistical chain, from paper printing to distribution, is currently under the direct audit of the Central Bureau of Investigation.
  4. No Digital Devices: Even center coordinators and invigilators will face stricter bans on mobile devices within the exam halls.

Step-by-Step: How to Update Your Exam Center

Once the NTA activates the “Center Correction Window” (expected shortly after the date announcement), follow these steps:

  1. Login: Access exams.nta.ac.in/NEET using your original Application Number and Password.
  2. Correction Window: Click on the link for “Re-NEET 2026 Center Change”.
  3. Select Preferences: You will be asked to provide four choices of cities in order of preference.
  4. Confirm: Save the changes. A revised confirmation page will be generated.
  5. New Admit Card: The NTA will issue fresh hall tickets reflecting the new center approximately 7–10 days before the exam date.

Expert Advice for Aspirants

With the re-exam looming, academic experts suggest a “Revision-First” approach:

  • Focus on Weak Areas: Use this extra time to master the Physics and Botany sections, which were reported as challenging in the cancelled May 3rd paper.
  • Mock Tests: Take at least two full-length mock tests per week to maintain the three-hour sitting habit.
  • Mental Health: Treat the re-exam as a fresh opportunity rather than a setback. The “Center Choice” flexibility is a step toward making the process more candidate-friendly.

Official Support

Candidates facing issues with the portal or center selection can contact the NTA Helpdesk:
