“This relaxation of the rule will remain in effect for the academic session 2025-26 and beyond. Therefore, students who have taken Mathematics Basic (241) are also permitted to take Mathematics (041) in Class XI. Prior to allowing these students to pursue Mathematics (041) in Class XI, the head of the institution or school must ensure that the students possess the necessary aptitude and ability for the subject,” stated CBSE in an announcement.
CBSE introduced two tiers of Mathematics for the Secondary School Examination starting March 2020 – Mathematics (Standard) for those intending to choose Mathematics (041) at the Senior Secondary level, and Mathematics (Basic) for those who do not wish to continue with Mathematics at advanced levels.
Students who completed Basic Mathematics in Class 10 are permitted to study Applied Mathematics exclusively.
Nevertheless, the board provided an exemption allowing students who studied Basic Mathematics to take Math in Class 11 due to the COVID-19 pandemic and other related challenges. This exemption will also be applicable for the academic session 2025-26.
