The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) is finalizing arrangements to host the Civil Services Preliminary Examination 2026 this Sunday, May 24. Millions of aspirants nationwide are scheduled to take the highly competitive screening test, which will be administered across two distinct sessions.
The Commission has made hall tickets accessible online and issued an extensive list of protocols regarding permitted items, dress code, and strict entry deadlines.
Essential Admit Card Protocols
Aspirants can download their digital hall tickets directly through the commission’s primary portals at upsc.gov.in and upsconline.nic.in.
Officials have emphasized that paper admit cards will not be sent by mail; candidates must bring a physical printout of the downloaded e-admit card to secure entry into their designated test centers. Additionally, this document must be safely retained until the entirety of the Civil Services Selection Process 2026 is concluded and final results are declared.
Before heading to the center, applicants should cross-verify that all profile details—including their legal name, photograph, and the integrated QR code—are cleanly printed and legible. Any inconsistencies should be flagged to UPSC administrators immediately.
Critical Timings and Entry Constraints
The preliminary assessment is organized into two primary time slots: the forenoon session starting at 9:00 AM and the afternoon session at 2:00 PM.
A strict zero-tolerance policy will be enforced regarding punctuality. Test centers will close their gates exactly 30 minutes prior to the start of each paper (8:30 AM for the morning session and 1:30 PM for the midday session). No candidates will be granted entry under any circumstances once the gates are locked.
What to Bring: Allowed vs. Banned Items
To maintain standard testing integrity, strict restrictions have been put in place regarding personal belongings:
- Mandatory Items: Candidates must carry their printed e-admit card, a valid government-issued photo ID, and a black ballpoint pen (required for filling out both the attendance registries and the OMR answer sheets).
- Permitted Accessories: Basic analog wristwatches are allowed inside the examination halls.
- Prohibited Items: Digital or smartwatches, smartphones, tablets, any other IT gadgets, text materials, bags, and expensive personal valuables are strictly forbidden inside the testing perimeter.
Structure of the Examination
The Preliminary stage serves exclusively as a screening metric to determine eligibility for the subsequent Civil Services (Main) Examination. It comprises two mandatory objective-type papers totaling a maximum of 400 marks. Crucially, the scores achieved in this initial screening round are purely qualifying in nature and will not factor into the final merit-based rankings of the successful candidates.
