The Central government has agreed to provide an extra attempt to civil service candidates who exhausted their final attempt last year amid the coronavirus pandemic. The announcement has come a week before the next notification for UPSC CSE was about to be released.
“This relaxation for the candidates… shall be a one-time relaxation only and shall apply only for appearing in CSE-2021 and shall not be treated as a precedent,” the centre said in a note to the Supreme Court today.
The Bench headed by Justice AM Khanwilkar was hearing the plea filed by several candidates who had prayed for a direction to the Centre to provide them “one extra attempt…in addition to number of permissible attempts, in view of innumerable, inevitable circumstances suffered by them due to Covid-19 pandemic, which prevailed in the entire country during the crucial period of their preparation and even on the date of examination, including but not restricted to rendering services as corona warriors, Covid infection to family members, suffering trauma physical and mental, lack of minimal proper infrastructure to prepare for the examinations, loss of income making it difficult to even survive during the pandemic”.
The civil services preliminary exam scheduled on May 31 last year was eventually held on October 4. The notification for the civil services exam this year is scheduled to be released on February 10.
