The West Bengal Joint Entrance Examinations Board (WBJEEB) has released the counselling schedule for WBJEE 2025, facilitating undergraduate admissions into engineering, technology, architecture, and pharmacy programs for the academic year 2025–26. According to the timeline, the seat matrix will be accessible on August 27, followed by the initiation of registration and choice-filling starting August 28 on the board’s official website, wbjeeb.nic.in.
Candidates will have until September 1 to finalize their registration and submit their preferences for courses and institutions. The results of the first round of seat allotment are set to be announced on September 3, based on the choices made by the candidates. The counselling process will occur in two rounds, each consisting of registration, fee payment, choice-filling, seat allotment, and institute reporting.
As mentioned in the X post by West Bengal Education Minister Bratya Basu, there are 460 colleges affiliated with 17 state universities for which the admission process has commenced. The legal complications had postponed the release of the merit list for undergraduate courses, creating uncertainty among students, many of whom enrolled in private higher educational institutions in West Bengal or moved to other states, as several months had passed since the higher secondary examinations were conducted in February.
On Friday, the Supreme Court stayed a Calcutta High Court order that directed the West Bengal Joint Entrance Examinations Board (WBJEEB) to annul and redo the merit list for the Joint Entrance Examination for Medical and Allied Sciences (Postgraduate) for 2024-25.
In light of the Supreme Court’s ruling, while the WBJEEB published the merit list for JEE candidates who took their exams in April, the higher education department began uploading the names of candidates for admission to undergraduate courses to a central portal starting August 22.
In the announcement, the education minister stated that 3,09,667 valid applicants have registered for admission to 460 colleges associated with 17 state universities.
“The release of the merit list was postponed due to legal issues, which caused significant concern for both us and the candidates along with their guardians. However, the process to allocate seats based on candidates’ preferences has now commenced,” he remarked. Basu indicated that the initial phase of uploading the merit list will proceed until August 25.
There are 4,02,557 seats available for candidates to pursue studies in over 100 subjects. Previously, on August 7, the Calcutta High Court noted that the WBJEEB had acted in a “clear violation” of a prior order concerning OBC candidates’ reservation and instructed it to revise the merit list and issue a new panel, ensuring a 7 percent reservation for the 66 categories of OBC candidates recognized by the West Bengal Backward Classes Department before 2010.
However, on Friday, a Supreme Court bench suspended the high court’s order. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee stated on Friday that the merit list for admission to undergraduate courses in various colleges has been uploaded to the central admission portal and expressed optimism that other pending issues will be resolved similarly.
“Due to certain legal disputes, we experienced a delay in the publication of results for several days. However, this was not deliberate. We will guarantee that no candidate is adversely affected by the delay in the release of results,” she had stated.
