The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati will commence the registration and application process for the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering, commonly known as GATE 2026 online. Once the registration opens, eligible candidates will have the opportunity to submit their applications through the designated portal at gate2026.iitg.ac.in.
The application period without a late fee will conclude on September 28. Conversely, the application window that includes a late fee will close on October 9. The examination is scheduled to take place on February 7, 8, 14, and 15, 2026. The results for GATE 2026 will be published on March 19, 2026.
To be eligible for the examination, candidates must possess a graduation degree in Engineering, Technology, Architecture, Science, Commerce, Arts, or Humanities from an accredited institution. Additionally, students currently enrolled in the third year or higher of the aforementioned degree programs are also eligible to apply.
The qualifying degree must be recognized by the Ministry of Education (MoE), All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), University Grants Commission (UGC), or the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) as equivalent to BE/BTech/BArch/BPlanning, among others.
Candidates who have completed or are in the process of obtaining their qualifying degree from an international institution are also permitted to apply for GATE 2026. During the standard application period, candidates belonging to SC, ST, PwD, and female categories are required to pay an application fee of ₹1,000 per paper for GATE 2026. In the extended application window, the fee increases to ₹1,500 per paper for these candidates.
For all other applicants, the application fee is set at ₹2,000 per paper during the regular period and ₹2,500 per paper during the extended application window. GATE is a national-level examination designed to evaluate candidates’ thorough understanding of various undergraduate-level subjects.

A valid GATE score can be utilized for-
- Admission to Master’s programs and direct Doctoral programs in Engineering/Technology/Architecture/Science/Commerce/Arts/Humanities.
- Admission to Doctoral programs in Engineering/Technology/Architecture/Science/Commerce/Arts/Humanities at institutions supported by the Ministry of Education and other Government agencies.
- Seeking financial support for the aforementioned programs.
- The financial assistance provided to MTech students amounts to ₹12,400 per month and is typically granted for a duration of 22 months.
For PhD programs (Direct PhD following BE/BTech/MSc equivalent), the financial assistance is ₹37,000 per month for the initial two years and ₹42,000 per month from the third to the fifth year. Numerous Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs) incorporate the GATE score in their recruitment processes.
